overland track

the overland track in winter. starting with an instant ascent into the jagged mountains on the northern end of the trail and undulating among some of the gnarlier landscapes, then beginning the slow descent through staggering moss-laden forests, roaring waterfalls, and endless mud puddles, a little detour up pine valley for some pure glistening fairy forest action, and then concluding with a wind through the swamplands ringing lake sinclair. around 100km in total. we had rain, hail, sleet, snow, and horizontal gales so it was often impossible to keep water off of the lens. this gave a lot of the photos a soft bloom, which felt appropriate to my heart after this pilgrimage.

eight days of frozen paradise and one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. I was lucky to share it with my peaceful soul brother, ashley bartholomew. there were cabins to sleep in along the way, but due to fire hazards in warmer months, the coal burning fireplaces had been replaced with a minute gas burner which produced only enough heat to dry socks within half a meter of them.

it was cold and our bags were heavy. the duckboarding was often either hidden under snow or slippery with ice, and my hips were bruised from stacking it. the whole experience was perfect and immersively wild. my spirit thrives under intense weather and terrain conditions; feeling as though you’ve earned the beauty, and remembering one’s place in it all.

our little group of walkers ended up including three solo travelers who had also left at the same time, till (deutsche), tim (oz) and hi (chinese)
